Week 5

Nankai Trough

Image result for nankai trough accretion The Nankai Through is a convergent plate boundary off the southern coast of Japan. It is the result of the Phillipine Sea plate subducting under the Eurasian plate which japan rests on. The boundary would be a deep ocean trench, however there is so much sediment creating an accretionary wedge that it fills up the trench. The trough is a big cause of earthquake concern for Japan, the last earthquake occurred in 1946 and the next one is predicted to occur in the middle of this century.

Atlanta Skyline

https://wallpapercave.com/wp/g43TzTU.jpg

Over the course of this week I spent time in a distant place, formally known as Atlanta. In this distant place, the sea-level has risen 300 plus feet over the course of 5,000 years due to run away climate change. Leaving abandon cities near cost lines, devastated. There is evidence of attempts to stop it, hence the dark skies. Before that, attempts were made to reduce ocean acidification, water degradation, and desertification. After all previous attempts, the people of the planet decided to eliminated pollution.
However, in this context of pollution emissions  produced from human activities, the polluting activities broadly expanded before the pollution was eliminated. Just like all major human impacts, this one had everlasting consequences on the biodiversity and variability of life on Earth.

Week 6 Geological Interpretations

Image result for great valley california
For my geological interpretation I would like to look at the California Great Valley. The great valley contains Sacramento, Fresno, and Bakersfield. I would like to know how the Cenozoic sediment in the Great valley was deposited because it is apparently nonmarine. That would suggest it was carried by rivers forming lakes or alluvial fans. I do not think it was carried by wind because it is not a sandy desert terrain. I would need to know the geologic history of connected rivers and lakes to see if there are any that could have deposited the sediment. I would also need to know the history of uplift in the area to explain how the valley was formed.

Sunday, May 6, 2018

The year is 7010. The date is May 6. I'm standing here in what I have known to be Incheon, South Korea, five thousand years in the future. What was once a beautiful coastal area is now completely submerged in the waters that once surrounded it. The climate change that began in my own time is the reason that this city is under water. Climate change led to extreme weather; hurricanes, tsunamis, and floods, which led to the sea rising. The sea level inched higher and higher until Incheon, along with many other coastal areas, became submersed. Not a trace of the coastal cities of my time remain.

This can be prevented. Incheon can be saved. It needs to start with the people of my own time. We need to take care of our Earth and the atmosphere. The greenhouse gas emissions and greenhouse effect is causing the planet to heat up, which is why these extreme weather event happen. We can stop these processes. Less burning of fossil fuels, no deforestation, less industrialization, more eco-friendly ways to live daily life. All of these things can help save the planet. With the decrease of gas emissions, as well as the increase of sinks to absorb these gases, the Earth can stop heating at the rapid pace that it is. This will prevent severe, geography altering weather, and Incheon can be saved, as well as the rest of the world.

I'm preparing to head back to my own time, to warn the people of what will happen if they continue to take advantage of the Earth.

Global Warming

Greetings from a distant traveler,

My name is Joel Checo and I am from the future. Approximately the year 7010, I was not born in the future but in a time in which what you know is still normal. I traveled to the future in my 30s and now have wanted to look back and the great place in which i was born. I was born in Brooklyn, New York or at least thats what it used to be called. The city of New York is no longer here in the future as is it now over 100' under water. I miss the city and wish that one day it could be preserved to look like it once did when i was a young boy. But this letter is not for me to cry about what has already transpired it is to warn you and help cities like New York, Miami and San Diego form having the fates in my reality. I hope that you or whom ever reads this can save the past and create a new future  even if it takes me with it. I love the new cities that have come from the tragedy but they are nothing like those of the old days. Warn all those who will listen that flying by airplane, massive gas/diesel powered cars and almost everything that isn't electric is destroying the planet. Cities like Brooklyn and Miami were ravaged by hurricanes and floods. As the temperature rose more and more countries and cities went under. Due to regulations in the government little was changed until it was to late. Fight for the beautiful places now before they are gone forever. As the population of the world grew their was no new places to place them so new constructions were built and almost all US national parks had been destroyed. You must stop this from happening, as i said before talk all those who will listen and teach them. Because with the spread of word the world can be saved. Starting with one and ending with as many as possible will only make the world survive longer. If people being to see that even if one person helped the environment will survive hours longer but think if the whole world helped and the years that could be given back. Don't lose hope and don't lose the beauty, the world is filled with limited resources make sure people know that there are other ways to make the world a great place!!!

Jakubiak - Week 8 - Global Warming

Hello from the future!

I've recently arrived here in Tampa Bay from the year 7010 and bring a dire warning with me:  If humans do not change their ways, the Earth will suffer!  Ever since the Industrial Revolution around 5000 years ago, we have seen carbon dioxide emissions skyrocket to unprecedented levels.  In your future, you will see the sea level rise significantly!  Eventually, thermal expansion combined with the melting ice caps will raise the sea levels enough to envelop your coastal cities (including this one!), eventually letting the increasingly acidic sea water erode and wash them away like they never existed.  By the year 2100, at the rate you're going, the sea will have risen a total of two meters!  This does not seem like much, but believe me, the effects are catastrophic.

This is no coincidence, as we have been able to track the history of natural climate changes in places like ice cored from some of the tallest (and coldest) places on the planet.  For years, it has shown a natural pattern which man has interrupted with his influences.  Other tracking such as deviation from the mean temperatures over centuries, or the change in ratio in ^16O to ^18O when analyzing Oxygen Isotopes during warming periods have also been warning signs frequently ignored.

So please, do what you can!  Help eliminate CO2 and other trace gasses from polluting the atmosphere; consider switching to clean energy alternatives such as solar energy to reduce the combustion of fossil fuels, and for heaven sake, stop burning vegetation!  This is just a start of course, there are many other things you can do to help the environment.  The sooner, the better though, because it only becomes more difficult as time goes on.

Oh, but humans are fine by the way. We just left the planet and went on to pollute others in our wake.

Week 8

Its the year 7010 I am currently in Atlantic City , New Jersey . This was once a popular city visited by locals and people worldwide. It was once known for its liveness. The city was filled with casinos, hotels, an amusement park and so many attractions . 5000 years have now passed and this city is now in ruins. Climate changes , global warming , erosion on the beach . The beaches are completely destroyed , they aren't even recognizable . The boardwalk is in complete ruins, stores , business and homes are barely standing . Standing on the beach, looking out you can see the debris in the shallow ocean . Due to global warming has caused the ocean levels . To bring this lively city back to life would be very pricey .

Plenty of  cities all through America has suffered through the centuries. There will be a meeting tonight in Washington , DC in White House. It is fully enclosed and protected from hazardous climate changes .World leaders, politicians, citizens and all people are invited.  In the meeting discussions about things to be down, calculations , and the next steps. There has been talk about living underground of making plans to live on the moon. Both experiments are both being started now . Soon people will be able to have the option to live on the moon and underground. Their have been test trails done with groups of volunteers. Reports have stated that things are running well.

Week 8 - Global Warming

To turn our heads to global warming or not.......

The sustainability of our Earth is on the line and tonight’s vote will determine the path we will take. Should we vote to restrict emissions to help curb the climate catastrophe we are facing with global warming? Or should we turn our heads, ignore the problem, and vote to continue with the unrestricted emissions environment in a time of increased deforestation to support industrial growth? We’ve heard repeatedly that humans are negatively impacting the climate through increased emissions at a rate that cannot be balanced by nature’s natural defenses; especially when the natural world continues to be swallowed up by human developments.  The signs that we need to act are all present; increased heat absorption in the Earth, increased wildfires, melting of the polar ice caps that were resulting to the increased sea level at a predicted rate of 1.25 inches per decade, coastal storms reaching further inland, and more frequent flooding. And yet, we struggle to determine how we will vote tonight! The counter to the argument that we need to act is the prediction that the Earth is moving towards an ice age, and the idea of anthropogenic climate change is absurd.
Despite my efforts to prove otherwise with my PowerPoint presentation and visual of the anticipated sea level rise, I am still faced with many non-believers.

Sea Levels on the rise

As can be seen in this illustration, many of the major coastal cities will soon be fully submerged and yet, I am unable to sway the vote of the many non-believers. Now is our opportunity to make a difference. The threat is real and in order to provide a more convincing argument, I decided to take advantage of my great-grandfathers time traveling device. I told everyone to sit back and relax and we journey forward 5,000 years in the future.
As we approached Los Angeles, we saw nothing but water. The once hustle and bustle of the city streets lined with tall sky scrapers was gone. All we saw were several house boats floating across the water and swimmers/divers swimming across the water with the city below them.

City submerged
https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5268466088047182623#editor/target=post;postID=8890810197548390745

I dialed the time travel device to zoom in and take a closer look. Over the sound system we communicated with the passengers of the boat. In our communications we learned the following:
·       The restricted emissions vote of 2018 did not pass.
·       Funding for the Smart car and Smart home ceased, and while there was still citizen support and interest, these advancements remained inaccessible to many due to high costs.
·       Deforestation continued at a high rate to support continued efforts for growth of industrialization and housing for Americans. Population growth continued at high levels, growing the demand for housing.

·       Alternatives for warming homes, such as burning corn for fuel, and installing solar panels was never fully accepted, therefore, the use of fossil fuels continued to rise, and carbon dioxide levels saturated the atmosphere.
·       With the increasing warmth of the Earth, surface heat indexes continued to rise. The Earth was faced with droughts, wildfires, increased rates of polar ice cap melting, resulting in the rise of the sea level, coast line flooding, tropical storms moving further inland, resulting in flooding and destruction. With each wildfire and devastating tropical storm, the Earth lost additional natural resources and it became almost impossible to combat the rate at which humans were negatively impacting the Earth with continued and increasing use of emissions.
·       The volatile environment wiped out the civilization of many communities; only a few were prepared to survive the climate catastrophe.
At the end of our time travel, I looked to the room and asked, “How will you vote tonight?”
Only time will tell the outcome of tonight’s vote.

Week 8 - Global Warming

The Coastal City I choose to visit is Buxton, NC. One of many little towns in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. 5,000 years have passed and despite our best efforts to combat climate change and costal beach erosion, most of the outer banks are now under water. The Eastern portion of North Carolina is now a shallow ocean. The earth has warmed and the glaciers have shrunk, which has caused the ocean levels to rise around the world. Over 5,000 years, the cost to repair beach erosion has sky rocketed and a lot of the current beach land was ultimately lost to the rising seas.

Because most of the coastal cities were facing the threat of the ocean, We have put more research into creating a livable habitat under water. The Major coastal cities in North Carolina such as Wilmington are now mostly under water structures that were built to sustain the global population. Companies like the Shimizu Corporation have perfected these under water structures. In 2018 we were just starting to solve this problem. Here is a link to the Shimizu Companies prototype. japanese-firm-plans-worlds-first-underwater-city-powered-by-sustainable-energy/

Week 8 - Global Warming

San Diego, present times.  Image courtesy of www.sandiego.edu
I love San Diego.  It is one of my favorite places to visit in California, so it is only natural that I would visit there in the future.  It also seems to be an ideal place to pick for this posting, since it is likely to be greatly impacted if the global warming continues at its same pace.

Imperial beach pier courtesy of https://blog.sandiego.org/2012/10/pier-fishing-san-diego/

Unfortunately for me I picked a pier to start my journey from.  The imperial beach pier.  I say unfortunately because when I arrive 5000 years into the future in 7018, I find myself in the ocean.  Naval Air Station North Island is submerged as is all of the former coast line.

Emissions. https://timesofsandiego.com/politics/2015/04/29/calif-to-fight-global-warming-with-new-greenhouse-gas-cuts/
The question, did global warming occur I think has already been answered, in that it is occurring.
While at the beginning of my trip I was hopeful that the human race would do something about it, humans greed and desire to outdo one another lead to the predictions of scientists to become obviously verified and true.  While some efforts were made (renewable energy sources, conservation of natural resources, restrictions and taxes on fossil fuel usage) ultimately, corporations tied to coal, oil, natural gas, other industries and their political ties across the world won out over a more sensible view of trying to preserve our world.

The San Diego river has been heavily salinated which has greatly changed the wildlife of the new coast line.  Looking to the South East, you can now have a slight view of the Gulf of California which has crept northwest from it's original position in our present time.  It is sad that this is what the world has come to with the rising sea levels, due to humans ignoring the warning signs (many brought up by fellow humans)!

Week 8 Global Warming

I have used the newly developed time machine to travel 5,000 years into the future. Is now May 6, 7010 and I stand near what used to be Miami Beach Florida. The city was abandoned about 2000 years ago when sea levels kept increasing and overtook the city infrastructure. Now Miami Beach is completely submerged under sea water, you can only see some of the tallest buildings that haven’t yet collapsed.
Credit: Nickolay Lamm. Data: Climate Central
I visited the state public library as well as University of Miami to collect information and account to what might’ve happened. Based on documentaries and archived journals kept by scientist, I was able to piece together the events that brought us to this situation. Year after year geologist, glaciologist and the science community, conducted studies and experiments providing factual data and ultimately proving that the burning of fossil fuels was the major contributor to elevated CO2 levels in our atmosphere.

                                Photograph: Stringer/Reuters
C02 levels are now 194 ppm. That’s an increased of 12 ppm from the year 2010. The science community warned our government and the public, but national leaders were skeptic and were more concerned about the national economy thus global warming issues took at back sit. Even though scientific research showed that we could not depend on terrestrial biosphere for balancing the excess of CO2 and such increase would have direct consequences on the greenhouse effect, no action was taken on reducing fossil fuel burning.

The lack of action in regulating anthropogenic effects prevented a mini ice age from taking place. As the glaciers kept melting, sea water levels kept increasing, ultimately overtaking our costal cities.

I have found documentation of a global movement for earth conservation called “Saving Our Planet”. It was mandated by the united nations and started around the year 6710.  New laws have been passed to limit the consumption of fossil fuels and transition to alternate sources of energy.

It took thousands of years and devastating consequences for us to grow a conscience and take appropriate measures to conserve our planet. As I travel back I can only hope that my voice is heard and my findings are proof enough, and maybe, prevent all this from ever happening.

Week 7 - Death Valley

Devil’s Golf Course - This area is of interest to me because of the salt sediment that was left from the evaporated ocean. This area is truly unique as you can listen to the sounds of the salt crystals expanding. Since this area is raised above the rest of Badwater, it doesn’t get flooded with waters the salt concentration is higher.

Dante’s View - This area is of interest to me because it represents what the valley region is in California. The mountains seen here have been pulled apart by plate movements. It is a great view of the valley from the mountain top. I wonder if the valley would be a good place to create new settlements or if there is risk of further separating.

Ubehebe Crater - This area was of interest to me because of the evidence of an old volcano. How many different types of rock have formed from the lava from these volcanos? Was this volcano similar to what Yellowstone is today?

Week 8- Global Warming - Natural Cycles

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce

The year is 7050 and I went back to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for the first time in 5,000 years. The time travel device I used took me here, and I didn't think it took me to the right place. The Islands looked drastically different from when I first visited it. The first time I was there the beaches were beautiful, there was many buildings around for shopping and food, and there was place to enjoy yourself. And now coming traveling so many years in the future, I cannot believe what I see.

The beaches are virtually gone, the sea level has risen and is threatening the buildings. The buildings take up the entire area, so there is no where to enjoy the water. The tourists are ruining the beaches and the surrounding areas with their fuel emissions from so many people visiting each weekend. The properties around the beaches are being built up to the dune lines, so there is no where to relax and enjoy the sunshine and water. The place is one natural disaster away from being wiped out completely. The whole island is either covered with water or buildings. There is no where to move around and site see. The place that I loved so much as a child turned into a dump.

I would have never thought that this place would be underwater and ruined with all the properties. The island that I visited as a child did not exist anyone. The people around the area could not live there anymore and the water was threatening everything. The damage from the water would ruin everything around it. One hurricane could devastate the entire island.

All the tourists and pollution from the cars have led to this happening. Yes, global warming and humanity have ruined this island. The trash, fuel, and the new tourists coming in each weekend have ruined this once beautiful place. Society killed this place the moment it started building so many properties. I would not want to come back to this place ever again. Its not the place I remembered and loved as a child. The future is scary and society needs to fix things if they want this place to still be around. Hilton Head Islands are about having a good time and relaxing. Not about trying to survive from the water and pollution.

Week 6 - Geological Interpretations

This week, I have visited Sacramento County in California. The first piece of information I would ask for would be a topographical map of the area. This map would show me how the terrain looks and where there might be peaks and valleys in the area. This will give me clues to how there might have been erosion from water or how there could have been conditions for mountains.

The second piece of information would be deep rock samples. I would want to see the type of rocks that are under the soil. Since Sacramento county is in a valley, I would expect to see sedimentary rock. Looking at the different strata would give me some clues about how long each historic period of the area was by the thickness of strata. Also, any evidence of sea life would be kept within the sedimentary rock.

The third piece of information I would want would be the location of any fault lines in the area. Fault lines give evidence of ground moving or shifting. If there are any elevation increases in the area, there might be evidence of metamorphosed or folding of the rock.

Above is a picture of New Hogan Lake. Although it is not located in Sacremento County, it is part of the same valley region that sacramento is in. Since Sacramento is an urban area, a picture of the region showing more geologic features better represents the area.

Axel Perez Week 8 Global Warming- vancouver british columbia

I decided to take a time traveling machine and visit the beautiful city of Vancouver, British Columbia. It is one of Canada's most diverse cities. It has people coming from all different types of ethnically backgrounds. The place is surrounded by mountains and also has a thriving musical scene and art scene. Unfortunate, 5000 years in the future, the earth did not cool down. Much of the city had to be adapted to float on the water that eventually started over taking it. Most of the polar ice caps have melted completely or fully melted which released a lot of water into the ocean. As well, the water has expanded due to the temperature of the water increasing from the earth's temperature increasing. We helped the earth increase its temperature at a lot greater rate due to our burning of fossil fuel. As well as some natural effects made global warming increase at a faster rate such as the 11 year solar cycle. Volcano activity also helped with the earth's temperature increasing.

One thing that society has tried to do to prevent global warming or reduce the rate of it is to focus on national climate change policies being implemented. Getting the world to work together and agree that this is a problem was the biggest factor. Overall, it was great seeing this place in the future and even though some of it didn't exist due to the water levels rising, the future technology managed to save it!

Week 8

Antediluvian Tarawa, Kiribati

I was assigned to go on a top secret mission to the future to see the effects of global warming on the planet and the society. The first thing I remember is the loud flash produced by the time travel process. The thing about time travel is that only organic matter is capable of being sent though. I won't get into how I found a new set of clothes.

 Image result for terminator lightning

I found myself in, or above, what used to be the city of Tarawa, Kiribati. In our day, before the legendary flooding, Kiribati was a small island nation in the pacific ocean. The highest elevation in the city was 3 meters. It had no chance to withstand the rising sea level. First sea walls were built - those extended the life of the country for 20 years. Eventually all had to be evacuated when the sea battered them down.

Mankind, with all its hubris, believed it could hold back the monster it had created. Global warming could not be stopped so easily. In the late 21st century the consequences we had been warned of again and again finally came to fruition. The CO2 and other greenhouse gasses belched out from human industry had warmed the atmosphere and depleted almost all ice around the globe. Positive feedback loops made permafrost release all its captured CO2 from eons past. The CO2 in the atmosphere leached into the ocean, acidifying it. The ecosystem of the oceans was mutilated, with corals extinct and many animals unable to survive in the new water.

To stop the warming, humans injected sulfate in great quantities into the atmosphere. The sky was turned white and dimmer, less sunlight was let through. Gone were the beautiful blue vistas of yore.

I have encountered other humans, poor beings scrapping together a living on floating island of junk they call "atolls".
Image result for waterworld atoll
An atoll in this new "water world"

The two most treasured commodities in this new world are what they call "hydro", pure water, and dirt. Dirt is like gold, invaluable for growing crops on real estate that is hard to find.
Image result for waterworld dirt
Here I am with dirt I retrieved in a makeshift diving bell from the ocean floor. With this I was able to pay dowry to my fiance's family. I do not think there remains any place with the technology to send me back to my own time.

I have heard legend of one sliver of civilization that remains, a mythical place at the bottom of the world. I believe it to be Antarctica, where I will go in search of a time machine when my son is of age to travel. Report over.

Week 8 - Travel Back to New Jersey

The year is 7045. I have decided to travel back to New Jersey and see my family vacation condo in Seaside Heights. I am traveling down towards to parkway and see signs for beaches ahead. Based on memory, I should be in central NJ. The ocean should still be about an hour away. I pull over and speak to a young couple, asking them about how long ago this happened. They said the CO2 levels have been rising for thousands of years causing ice caps and glaciers to melt and the coastlines of countries around the world to shrink.

The water rising happened gradually, great-great-great-great grand parents had pictures in their home showing what the shores used to look like. Day by day, the water grows closer and efforts to change things have increased, but still there are many skeptics.

Week 8 - Malibu

I asked him how far the dial would go and he said all the way to the year 7010. I figured what the hell let's go for it and said let's go to Malibu.  When we arrived I thought the machine must have screwed up since we were floating in the ocean. At first I thought the machine screwed up but he assured me that we were in the right place.  It was at that moment that I realized just how badly humanity had screwed the pooch.  Where I came from I always heard talk about global warming and how harmful it could be but for the most part no one really seemed to care. Over time legislation started passing
that attempted to counter the effects of global warming and people started buying electric cars and what not to try and mitigate it but it appears that we were too late.  The planet warmed so much that the glaciers melted and raised sea levels substantially to the point that coastal cities like Malibu got submerged. The world as I had known it no longer existed.  I figured that the best way to cope with this sobering revelation would be to find the nearest brewery and see what beer tastes like 5,000 years in the future.

Future - Cooper Trodler - Week 8

I moved to New Mexico as I thought this would be the place to retire and live out my days enjoying the sunshine and the ease of the quiet living.
It is 7050.
Over many decades and centuries, the carbon emissions have increased a hundred fold.
The sun bakes the earth day in and day out. Earth's temperature increases each year as it retains heat and continually increases. While us people inhabiting the earth continually to use and burn coal, gas and a large amount of natural gas. Us inhabitants add tons and tons of carbon dioxide to the air each day. This in turn creates an issue of more and more heat engaged and held to cause the warming of the earths surface. This is where the issue of global warming takes place for us people on earth.
With global warming we will face numerous problems, such as rising sea levels, poor air quality, high temperatures and this all will cause decreasing food production.

Florida

I sat in the worn out time vehicle – a modified 1965 Ford Galaxy (suck it DeLorean!) – and eagerly entered the destination for my first FUTURE travel:  Tampa FL, year 7018.  But the message came back “Impossible location.”  That’s not good. Suspecting the worst i moved the coordinates drastically inland and finally found a landing spot.

Two minutes later my concern was realized: Florida was underwater and i was exiting the vehicle on a shoreline that was far to the northwest of where it should be.  It was clear from the outset that ocean level had risen and all those "drastic" mega-predictions about the ice melting worldwide were true.
See the source image

The first thing i noticed was that the countryside wasn’t even countryside anymore. Entire cities had been relocated and populations crushed together. TV screens were filled with talking heads bragging about the salvation of cultures and the spread of unity though massive relocation efforts. The transplant of "ancient Venice" seemed to be of particular pride. In order to survive mankind seemed to have bonded together like something out of the movie “Independence Day” – but instead of fighting aliens, they had fought against the Planet itself.  But did they see that it was against the choices of the past that they had struggled? War was no more as I expected. It seemed that we could not be saved from what we had done to earth....but it was uplifting to see that at least we had banded together and saved us from ourselves.

The warmer climate meant the new territory to the far north and south was open to settlement. But the evolution of the land could not keep up with the need.

Nor was there any hope among the stars....settling Mars didn’t happen because apparently having to transplant everything – including something to breath – was just too much.

The water apparently didnt rise at once. It happened gradually and the more affluent cities had time to slowly relocate. So there was interesting diving to be had....hundreds of feet down through former skyscraper and such.  But these structures were not riddled with the bones of a people caught off guard.

One familiar voice still rang out through the media.  One voice that i could have sworn i would not hear. One theme i would have bet everything i owned would have died out long ago.  Across the Millenia there still echoed the vibrant chant: “WE did not cause this – it would have happened anyway.”

Week 8 - New York City

Visiting the future of our world was like traveling to a completely different world. Due to the overuse of fossil fuels and other activities that produce greenhouse gases, several drastic changes took place. The once bustling metropolis of New York City has gone through many changes, most notable is the absence of any residence. Initially, the melting glaciers caused sea level to rise to the point where much of the city was submerged, with only the tallest buildings still defiantly piercing the waves. This, however, is not the New York that I find myself in. By the time I arrive a new ice age has dawned, though to call it an ice age is rather generous. The overall warming of the planet combined with the cooling of the ice age has caused temperatures to level out at almost normal levels. The ice caps are barely larger in 7010 than they were in 2010. Sea level has receded slightly, allowing more of New York to be visible, but still mostly submerged. The inhospitable weather patterns, rise in sea level, and severe droughts decimated the human populations. The relatively few surviving humans live in a few scattered bio-domes with artificially generated environments. Due to the constant need to focus on survival for much of the intervening time, technology has not progressed as far as it should have. Thankfully, the humans of this time see the errors of the past and are working towards finding a way to restore the damaged planet to its former healthy state.

Week 8 - Global Warming in the Future

Visiting the Los Angeles Bay

The Los Angeles Bay circa 7018
It seems that everyone was right, climate change was not only real but precipitated by an increase in human factors. We decided to check out the West Coast, specifically Los Angeles to really see the effects of the ice caps that melted. Back in 2018, it was expected that the average global temperature would rise by 2.5 to 10 degrees within 100 years. On a whim, we dialed the machine to 5000 years into the future. This was probably a bit too aggressive, as it seems that humankind couldn't bring themselves to science over posting selfies. I digress...

We had known that carbon dioxide levels were increasing at a rate of 100 to 200 percent more than what was recorded from the last ice age. Modern industry, deforestation, and melting ice caps all contributed to this. While countries like China had been invested in green technologies, there wasn't enough interest from Western societies to really propel the movement forward. Bad politics aside, increased coal consumption and tapping reserved fossil fuels greatly increased the rate of carbon dioxides, methanes, and other harmful gases.

Super hurricane
The problem didn't just stop there though. With an increase in global temperatures, more severe weather pummeled the planet. At some point, massive hurricanes from the Northeast Pacific basin tracked more and more northward. Very little civilization exists along the Californian coastline here in 7018, partly because of the elongated hurricane season, increased frequency of events, and severities of the systems.

With increased temperatures and water vapor in the atmosphere from melting ice caps, an increase in cloud cover was observed. This doesn't seem very significant, but keep in mind that cloud cover acts as an insulator. With increased insulation, local temperature trends increase and pollutants build up. From what I see over Los Angeles in 7018, a thick grey blanket of stratus stretches as far as the eye can see. Beneath it, yellowish haze, trapped with nowhere to go until the next major weather system pushes it out.

Ls Angeles submerged
After returning from 7018 Los Angeles, I had to reflect on our responsibilities to this planet. We only get one planet, there is no substitute (Mars is still a poor backup, and hardly one that can support the world population). We must take proper measure to curb our carbon dioxide output, and increase the ability to absorb it safely (naturally or artificially). Without getting control of this problem now, there is no going back.

Week 8- Galveston, Texas

This week I actually traveled back in time about 5,000 years to what was known as Galveston, Texas. Unfortunately for the upcoming generations global warming was a real event and apparently was unavoidable. Galveston is no longer and the coastal region is now Oklahoma, which is ok cause nobody really like Oklahoma anyway. Everything that was frozen has thawed out and sea level has risen dramatically, but as it was mainly humanities fault because of all the problems with the ozone having all those man made gasses, like CFC, get trapped and the green house effect, that everyone said was a hoax, this new coastal region has happened slowly and not many people suffered, other than loss of property. The other thing I learned is that there are now man made cities on the water itself because there is not enough land for everyone in the world to live on.  I guess the question is, now that there is less land and most people travel about on sailboats or paddle, will the continents comeback eventually? Will everything that has happened in the last 5,000 years reverse itself with longer winters and more refractivity to keep things cooler without all those ozone problems let mankind make a comeback and get the land masses back or are we doomed to spend eternity on the water?
