Maui - Igneous Rock found as distraction during Diving Trip
I found igneous rocks in the Ioa Valley in Maui - specifically the Needle of Ioa on the windward side of Maui. Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. My friends and I took the day off from diving in order to tour the island and my interest in volcanic activity took us to the Ioa Valley. In my research, I found during the eruptions cycles of the West Maui mountains, gas and steam reacted with the magma to form a bubble. The bubble rose and forms intrusive rocks that form the Ioa Needle, as pictured below. The area is considered to be sacred by local Hawaiians. We all loved the tour of the lush, near rainforest like area of Ioa and the rocks there.
IOA Needle on Maui - 1,200 feel high
There are many streams and rocks on the hike up the Ioa Valley, you can drive up a large area, and then hike in part of the area. A nice break from Scuba Diving.
