My daughter and I made a visit to the Great Salt Lake in Utah. We found a place at the lake called the Spiral Jetty and it was awesome site to see. The rocks there were covered with crystal formations. Our curiosity got the better of us and we went for a closer look to see what kind of crystals they were. At first look the crystals had a no color with some translucency but upon closer inspection they had some impurities. We broke off one of the crystals and found a cleavage of three planes at 90 degree angles. At this point I had a pretty good idea of what the igneous rock was so I told my daughter to taste to see if she could figure it out. She chucked the crystal and said it was really salty and at that point we knew we found the mineral Halite, which is a sedimentary rock type.
