open meadow and volcanic cinder cone under rainy skies

My husband and I visited Sunset Crater Volcano in Arizona. It is known for  it's brilliantly colored scoria deposits on the cone. Around 1085 ,the ground began to shake, and lava spewed high into the air. Sunset Crater is a colorful igneous rock composed of lava fragments called cinders. It was created when molten rock spewed from a crack in the ground, high into the air, solidified, then fell back as cinders or ash. The later in the evening it got, the more we started to understand why it is called the Sunset Crater. Even though out the day you could see the volcano looked like a sunset. The cone is named for the topmost cap of oxidized, red spatter, which makes it appear bathed in the light of the sunset.
