Traveling
into Eastern Europe we land into Ukraine. In Ukraine there are deposits of
precious and semi-precious stones such as beryl, amethyst, amber jasper, rock
crystals and more which are important in the production of ceramic articles and
construction materials. The river that runs through Kiev is one of the major
rivers within all of Europe and it is called the Dnipro. It rises in Russia and
flows down through the countries to the black sea, Dnipro is the fourth longest
river in all of Europe. Although Kiev is situated within the terrace area of
Dnipro, the floodplain is small and extremely close to the city, so constant
restoration and renovation is necessary around the city. When the rivers
streams gradient increases significantly we see rapids and that is what we have
in areas of the Dnipro River, these rapids were part of a trade route in the
late eighth and early ninth centuries. The Vikings who used this river hundreds
of years ago had to portage or carry their ships over and around seven rapids because
they would have ultimately destroyed their vessels.

Taking the
bus from Kiev to Poltava is a 4 and a half hour ride, it is hot and it is
miserable yet when you look outside you are simply in awe at the beauty of the
country and all of the different characteristics that present themselves;
fields of sunflowers under the crystal blue sky and wet lands are some of the
more prominent visuals Ukraine has to offer. Although the wetlands of Ukraine provide
an amazing habitat for plants that enjoy this type of environment, they impede drainage
and thus impede decay.
