Week 7 - Badwater Basin
This week field trip, I decided to visit the Badwater Basin in Death Valley. The Badwater basin sits 282 Feet below sea level making it the lowest possible point in North America. The salt flats only receive an estimated amount of less than 2 inches of rainfall per year and much of the water is unable to flow out of the basin and so the water becomes trapped and eventually evaporates. One of the questions I have while researching this area is if the basin was to fill up with rain water, how would this newly lake compare to the Dead Sea in Jordan? Would it be as salty or even more saltier than the Dead Sea? would the buoyancy be the same as well? One way to determine this would be to gather a sample from the Dead Sea and gather another sample from the flats and test it out.
