For this weeks travel blog, I decided to visit the Andes Mountains. There is a convergent plate boundary between the oceanic Nazca plate and the continental South American plate. The main cause of the Andes Mountain Range forming is the compression of the western rim of the South American Plate because of the subduction of both the Nazca Plate and the Antarctic Plate. This convergent plate boundary forms what is called the Benioff Zone, an area with a large number of earthquakes. The Andes sit in the Pacific ring of fire and the fault line of the Andes is also a hot zone for volcanic activity.
