South Table Mountain
Golden, Colorado
My family enjoys finding different places to take walks with our dogs. We try to find a different place every week to check out. This week I chose South Table Mountain in Golden, Colorado because it was a location that had exposed igneous rock. This mountain was formed by ancient Paleocene lava flows. South Table Mountain is underlain by sedimentary rocks. At the beginning of the trail there is a board that shows how the mountain came to be and how far it dates back. This trail and mountain was said to date back to the time that American Indians Tribes used this region. It is also said that archaeological remains are up top of the mountain. South Table Mountain is known for its zeolite minerals. These minerals can be seen as far as from Colorado School of Mines.
We explored the area and looked at all the different rocks that existed there. It was interesting to me how there were many different types of rocks. I was not even sure what all was there. You could see different holes and streaks in the rocks on the main rock at South Table Mountain. It was cool to see how the rock was formed. It seemed to tell a story just by the way that the rock was standing. Most of the rock consisted of a dark brown and light brown consistency and even in a couple of spots I found that part of the rock had a black spot. I never realized how something formed from lava flows was so close to where we live. It was great to realize just how cool it is that we get to see things like that every single day.
