Stone Mountain
This was a bit harder than I thought, but an adventure for sure. The first place I visited, unfortunately did not have igneous rocks. It was a place called Little River Canyon. The majority of the rock that I found there was grainy in texture and colored much like sand. I came to the conclusion that it was sandstone, which is sedimentary. Even though I didn't appear to find igneous rock at the first stop, it was still fun identifying the sandstone and a learning experience for sure. I had to go with a formation that I knew included igneous rock for my second pick. A place called Stone Mountain. Stone Mountain is considered the worlds largest exposed mass of granite. The formation is a dull grayish color with a rough texture. It appears that the formation is fused with different types of minerals, which definitely confirms that the formation is granite. It was an exciting trip, since it had been years since I had seen Stone Mountain. It's a little bit of a drive from where I live, but well worth it. The formation stands 1,686 feet tall and allows you to see over 40 miles on a clear day. You can take a little lift to the top or you can hike up the back side of it. Unfortunately, hiking is out of the question with two toddlers, so we took the lift. I have never payed attention to the mountains geology until now, so it was interesting to really examine the rock. It's impressive to see such a large piece of granite, rather than the broken ones we picked up as children.
