Week 6 - Geological Interpretations - Juan Torres
Geologic Maps of Los Angeles County
This past summer I visited Los Angeles. In visiting different areas of Los Angeles County such as Griffith Park, Santa Monica and Malibu Mountains I could tell that most of the land there seemed as if it was underwater at one point in time. The coastal line along Malibu and Santa Monica seemed to be shaped by erosion from the rivers running through the mountains. Three important pieces of data that I would choose to help in the geological interpretation of the Los Angeles County Geology would be information of the stratigraphy of the Los Angeles county. Knowing the order and relative position of the rocks in the region would help explain the geologic periods that Los Angeles County went through until present time and how the mountains around the basin were formed. Another piece of data that I would like to know is the tectonic setting upon which Los Angeles County is located. Knowing the tectonic setting would also explain how subduction zones occurred and created the geology of the area. The next piece of data is knowing the type of fossils found throughout Los Angeles County. Knowing more information of the type of fossils found in certain areas can help interpret the geological events.
