Week 7- Death Valley- Ismael Rodriguez

Artist's Palette

My first stop was the Artist’s Drive. There are many slopes and mountain ranges among this landmark. The rock has a variety of colors from reds to browns to blues. I find the diversity to be very interesting. I would like to know what kind of shifts caused the formation of these slopes and ranges. Also, what caused the variation of rock and mineral composition as well as colorization. Does the climate in this environment play a huge role?

My second stop was the Death Valley Dunes. The dunes carry on for many miles and are surrounded by mountain ranges. There seem to be peaks and low points among the dunes. There is also sign of movement among the sand and rocks, most likely caused by wind. What kind of wind speeds do the dunes face to carry sand and rock from one end to another? What king of geologic shift happened for the dunes to exist? Also, what forms of rock and mineral exist within the sand?

Last place I stopped at was the Devil’s Golf Course. This area seems to have a lot of shifts in formation and is very unique. It reminds of a sea corral, in how the mounds of earth overlap one another. These formations seem to go on for miles and miles. There appears to be salt sediments within the formations. This makes me wonder what caused these minerals to exist in this part of Death Valley? Also, does this show any sign of water existing within this area? What kind of phenomena causes these formations to grow in the way that they do
