San Diego County is very diverse when it comes to its terrains. The
county is next to the ocean in the west and surrounded by desert and mountains
to the east. San Diego County is about 900 square miles of complex land. One
thing that makes San Diego County amazing, geology wise, is the San Andreas
fault. The fault affects a lot of counties in California. It is where the
Pacific Plate rubs against the North American Plate. This interaction creates
some of the intense earthquakes faced in the county. There are also the Elsinore
and San Jacinto faults in San Diego, which create mountain ranges and valleys.
This information guides me to wanting to ask, how often do shifts in the plates create new mountain ranges in the east of the county? Do these shifts create for reduction in land mass in the shores? How safe is it to build structures and homes at the base of Julian, which is a well known area in the county? How frequent are earthquakes and at what magnitude?
