Week 7 - Rio De Janeiro in 7010

It is the year 7010 in Rio de Janeiro, a coastal city in Brazil. What was once a sprawling city 5,000 years ago is now completely submerged in water. In its place is a new city that floats atop the water.

As the years rolled into the present, governments and citizens did little to avoid global warming. Only after circumstances began to worsen were policy put in place to curb the changes, however, they were too late. Over time, the temperature rose enough to completely melt all the ice on planet Earth. This raised the sea level by approximately 230 feet. The global land mass was significantly reduced and many plants and animal life went extinct. Only the most resilient and adaptable species survived.

As for Rio de Janeiro, about 80-90% of its area was submerged in water. The photo above is a topographic map of Rio de Janeiro. It was retrieved from archives in the submerged city and dates back over 5,000 years ago. As you can see, Rio de Janeiro was not 3 isolated islands, as it is now, but was actually part of the mainland of Brazil.

In the past, nothing was done to reduce global warming until the ice caps began melting drastically. Since then, governments came together to initiate policies that would bring about change. The burning of fuels for energy was eventually replaced with green energy sources such as hydro, wind, and solar. Policies were also set in place to improve farming practices and protect natural forests and oceanic regions. Though the planet seems to be in a constant summer, scientist believe we are approaching another ice age. With the policies set in place, the world looks ahead to a brighter future, one that learns from its past mistakes and respects the forces of nature.
