Last Fall, my girlfriend and I visited Ireland. I think the highlight of our trip was Northern Ireland, from where we got to see the Giant's Causeway. It's on the northern coast, and the rocks form these Hexagonal shapes that fit together like a puzzle, seemingly almost forming a set of stairs.
The first picture you can see the formation forming somewhat of a stair-like formation, and the second image is closer image to the rocks. The Causeway is believed to be formed by Black Basalt, which is a type of igneous rock. It was formed by molten rock which was forced up through fissures of the Earth, from which the manner in which the lava cooled formed a hexagonal shape. Erosion has caused some of the edges of some of the rocks to round off, even creating some round rocks known as "giant's eyes".
Here is a third final picture from a distance, unedited. It is kind of cool because my wonderful smart phone camera begins to blur the edges of the rocks and people, almost naturally creating a mural effect.
