Pontic Mountains - Converging Plates - Austen Morgan

The Pontic Mountains in Turkey are along the site of the collision between the Eurasian Plate and the African plate. This collision is where the continental crust of the Eurasian Plate meets the continental crust of the African plate. Subduction is occurring here as the Eurasian plate is sinking below the African plate. On a trip to the Pontic mountains one could find a variety of rocks including serpentinite, basalt, dolerite and chert. The stress here is compression, as the Eurasian plate is being compressed below the African plate. This also increases risk of an earthquake in the are of the Mediterranean. This is a normal fault with a faulting structural style. There is a Turkish monastery built into the side of one of the Pantic mountains, making for a dramatic sight as seen the image.
