Week 4- Volcanoes

I decided to visit the volcanic island of Krakatoa. It is located in Indonesia between the islands of Java and Sumatra. The volcano on this island has been around for hundreds of years. The last major eruption was in August of 1883. This explosion falls under a 6 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. During this explosion there were about 165 nearby villages that were destroyed. The death toll reached up to 36,000 people. The explosion was so massive it caused tsunamis to occur. This volcano exists due to previous eruptions that formed calderas, a form of mountains. These eruptions eventually involved different regions that created Krakatoa island. Since the big explosion in 1883, the volcano has minor eruptions. The most recent ones happened in the early 2000’s. If another major explosion happens, there could be hundreds of fatalities as the island is more populated.
