Volcanos - Kalauea in Hiwaii - Austen Morgan

Kilauea is a currently active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands. Kilauea is located along the southern coast of the island and is between 300,000 and 600,000 years old, emerging 100,00 years ago. Kilauea has two currently active rift zones, one on the east side extending 125 km and another extending  35km west, as an active fault of unknown depth. The volcano has been erupting almost without cease for nearly 36 years, including an eruption in May on 2018 that shot ash 30,000 feet into the air. Kilauea was created as the Pacific tectonic plate shifted over the Hawaiian hotspot in the Earth's mantel. Five other Hawaiian volcanos appear on the same hotspot, including Kohala, a volcano that is over 1,000,000 years old.

Kohala is so old it we are able to learn about the reversal of Earth's magnetic field 780,000 years ago because Kohala experienced and recorded it all. It is believed that Kohala last erupted 120,000 years ago.
