In middle school, my environmental science teacher took us on a field trip to the Llano Uplift in central Texas. It's basically a large granite dome made of igneous and metamorphic rock, consisting of many minerals including amethyst, quartz, galena, garnet, and even gold in some places. It also contains the only known deposits of llanite. At first I thought that the formation of the Uplift was caused by the rocks pushing upward, but I learned online that it was actually caused by younger sedimentary rocks eroding away, leaving the dome of granite. Some areas, like Enchanted Rock, looked almost pink from the granite, which was really interesting.
