Week 5_ Converging Plates

Andes Mountains

My husband and I took a special trip to the Andes Mountains located in South America. My husband marveled at the beauty of the mountains and mentioned how amazing they were. I told him the Andes Mountains are much more complicated than just being mountains. The Andes Mountains are the result of a convergent boundary which consists of oceanic and continental plates. When the two plates collide the oceanic plate subducts underneath the continental plate. My husband mentioned is that why there is a volcano in the mountain range. I explained Yes but there is not one volcano but many different volcanoes in the Andes. I also told him did you know that they are also considered to be a fold mountain range. This is present in the sedimentary rocks. Furthermore, there is stress from opposite sides known as compression stress, this compression stress is what causes the Andes mountain to fold. I mentioned you can tell they are folded mountains are the greater in height than width. Therefore, they were created with a reverse faults.
