Week 6

I chose to “visit” Crescent City, California, as this is a place I had recently traveled in real life. It was a beautiful area, and I wasn’t surprised to find that the surrounding geological map was somewhat complex. To the east of the city Jurassic and Cretaceous sandstone exist. However, within the city, which is on the coast, lay terrace deposits. I’d assume that these are younger deposits from the Pleistocene era. Thrust faults are abundant in the ocean just off the coast. Studying this area, I would like to radio date samples of old petrified wood, or rock.  I think that this would allow me to see the age a diversity of geologic activity in and near Crescent city.
