Week 3 Deserts -- Robbie Todd II

I took this photo of the Mojave desert when I live in Wrightwood, CA.  This is looking out towards the desert from Guffy camp ground right above the city of Wrightwood.  The Mojave desert is located in the southwestern United States.  It stretches across California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.  The Mojave desert was at one time part of an ancient interior sea, volcanic activity helped form the area.  Throughout the area there are igneous rock formations called by the volcanic activity.  Thanks to the Sierra Nevada Mountain range casting a rain shadow causing very little rain that fails throughout the year.  Average rain fall being around 5 inches a year.  This desert also has a massive swing in temperatures from day to night.  I can personally say that I have felt 30 degrees F in the mornings to 80 degrees F in the afternoon.  There are also strong winds that howl most of the time.

The interesting fact about this desert is the Joshua trees.  Joshua trees are only found in this area.  Death Valley is also located in the Mojave desert.  Some of the minerals that are found in the desert is borax, gold, silver and iron.  In Boron there is a borax mind that is still active today.  Because of the area being dry and remote the Mojave desert is home to Edwards AFB (Airforce Test Site), US Navy China Lake Weapons Test Facility and the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave CA.  These conditions make it perfect for testing aircraft.  I really enjoyed my time exploring the Mojave.
