After watching the video this week we decided to visit the Andes mountains in South America. These mountains were formed by compression as the pacific oceanic plate goes under the South American continental plate. The compression causes the rock to rise and form the mountains and pushes the oceanic plates under the crust to form magma that erupts from nearby volcanoes.Because of this compression reaction the fault type seems to be a reverse fault but this is hard to see when enjoying the beauty of the ranges. You can see the igneous rocks that have formed during the eruption of the volcanoes in the past that show the history of the ranges.
