Today I took a trip to the Himalaya Mountains. The mountains
are located between India and Tibet. The mountain range was formed when 2 continental
plates the Indian and Eurasian plate collided about 40 million years ago. The
stress involved with the Himalayas is compression which causes faulting and
folding in the mountain range. The rocks that make up the Himalayas are
sediment rocks and some metamorphic which we pushed up against the other plate
causing folding of the rocks. The Himalayas are comprised of mostly folds since
it is a massive mountain fold. It is on a reverse fault which is where collisions
usually happen which is also where you usually will find folds which you can at
the himlayas.
