The area that I chose to visit in California is the Mojave Desert. According to the geologic map, that area seems to have a very complex geology. To find out the geological events that happened here and the in the correct order, the first request of information I would ask for is the type of layers that have been deposited in the area. By getting a collection of layers, I can determine some of the geological events that happened in the area and in what order they happened by using the principle of superposition. The second request would be a comparison of a separate outcrop in the area, and by using the principle of lateral continuity, I could determine how far a certain layer extended to and other geological events that have happened in between them. The third request would be a data of faults that are found in the area, which depending on where they were located, I can use the principle of cross-cutting relationships to get an idea of when the faults happened in relation to the rocks and layers around them. Faults also indicate there was some form of force applied which would hint to other geological events in the area.
Omar,
ReplyDeleteGreat post, you are spot on with the use the principle of cross-cutting relationships to identify the faults that occurred and the relationship they have with visible rock sediments in that area. The lateral continuity would also be a great use for the surrounding ranges there I believe also.
