Week - Geologic Maps

Panamint alluvial apron

This week we had the pleasure of taking a trip to Death Valley. This photo was taken at Golden Canyon. In 1976, there was a very strong down pour of rain that caused mud, water and rock to flow through here. I would like to know what type of rocks they are. You can see where the mud has made the rocks change colors and also how the water was went it entered into the narrow canyon. I would like to know how fast the water and mud was traveling through the narrow canyon. I would also like to know what the canyon was shaped like before the major storm that cause the flooding.

Shorelines etched into Shoreline Butte.

This is the Shoreline Butte. The flat terrace is called strandlines that cut into the hill side of by waves. I would like to know how long does it take for a hillside to have this much affect. The big line going down the center of the hillside what caused it. They believe that they could see the depth of the lake that was here. I would like to know how long did it take for the lake to dry up.

illustration on the way

This Zabriskie Point in Death Valley. There is a lot of dry, molted rocks in this picture. I would like to know why is the top portion of the rock different color from the bottom. This place makes it impossible to grow any plant like. I would like to know why is that. The further you look into the picture the darker the rocks grow. The ones in the beginning looks like they have just been formed and as you get closer to the back they look like they have been there for thousands of years. I would like to know how long has the rocks in the front been formed.

Thank you,
Diamond Ringo
