Family adventures on the Prince William Sound

The adventures for my family continues

Showing the kids all different types of things in the world is the biggest part of going on these adventures. So, when I found the Prince William Sound I knew that this was something that everyone was going to enjoy. The Prince William Sound is located in Anchorage Alaska.
While on the cruise we were exposed to massive glaciers. As we looked out over the edge of the ship besides water all you can see are the white cliffs. As we watch over the side our tour guide went on to explain the make-up of the glaciers.  Our guide told us that Alaska has approximately 100,00 glaciers that covers close to 30,000 miles. As we move along the Gulf of Alaska you can see as the glacier break off and the ice splash into the water.
As we went on she continued to tell us how glaciers were formed. It is amazing how when enough snow accumulates and stacks layer on layer. The snow becomes so large that it becomes ice crystals. When there is air pockets the weight shifts and forces the glacier to begin to move. Depending on the slope determines how the glacier moves.
The glaciers moves by internal deformation of the ice. When you see the glacier moving is because there is a thin layer of water at the bottom. The water might be from melting glaciers. The greatest thing we learned besides about the glaciers is that as the glaciers move materials are transported and dropped at the bottom of an ocean floor.

Some other important things I learned about glaciers is not that they can be harmful but they fertile soil for crops and also offer freshwater.
