Back in 2007, I traveled to Costa Rica with my high school where we went on a hike at Arenal volcano. During the hike, we came across a large field of basalt rocks and boulders at the base of the volcano. The basalt seemed to be formed from the eruptions of Arenal that tend to be small in size but at large enough to throw or roll these basalt rocks down the side. The formation of the basalt crystals ranged from small to large creating a porphyritic texture and the color of the rocks was dark based on its silicate amount which classified it as a mafic composition. Looking out on this field of basalt rocks you can see the vegetation growing through and around the boulders giving a nice contrast to the otherwise dark color of the field.
