Trip to Red Rocks

I have chosen to write about the time I visited Red Rocks Park with my friends in Jefferson County, Colorado. The rocks contained in Red Rocks Park are a part of the Fountain Formation which formed over 100 million years ago, earlier than the Rocky Mountains. The rocks found in Red Rocks Park, are considered sedimentary rocks, or sandstone, with red coloring. These sandstone rocks are a conglomerate that contains iron oxides, quartz, and alkali feldspar. The mixing of alkali feldspar and iron oxides during the early period of the rock's creation gives it it's beautiful red coloring. The sandstone was coarse to the touch, which means that it must have had a slow cooling rate, making large crystals and a rough texture. These Red Rocks were formed from the Ancestral Rockies. The Ancestral Rockies moved sediment, pebbles, and rock, to the Fountain Formation’s current position. The Ancestral Rockies were broken down due to exposure of an oxygen-rich atmosphere. I enjoyed visiting Red Rocks Park and would recommend anyone who wants to see some beautiful rocks or wants to see a concert at the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater visit this summer.
