Field Trip to Mauna Loa Volcano in Hawaii - Week 2

My girlfriend and I took a trip to one of Hawaii’s Islands to explore one of the most active volcanos of all time. We journeyed to a place called Mauna Loa, Hawaii where the site was incredible but quiet. It is astounding to me how a volcano is like a sleeping giant; you better not wake it up. The experience was incredible especially exploring the massive land of extrusive igneous rock. In all, there are three main types of rocks which are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. I visualize it as a tree where those 3 main rocks branch off into more detailed identification. There are two main groups of igneous rock which are Intrusive and extrusive. What is so neat is that when a volcano erupts, the magma from the volcano spreads everywhere which eventually starts the process called crystallization. Basically, crystallization is the cooling process at the earth’s surface, and it turns into extrusive igneous rock or volcanic rock. The lava that is still in the volcano is called intrusive igneous rock. When in its final state, as shown in the picture below, there are a few different textures. First is the glassy texture and this is when the magma crystalizes. The other scientific texture shown in the picture below is called pyroclastic, which is the reminisce from ash and other large blobs from the volcano. All in all, this experience was incredible to be a part of and check this off my bucket list.
