Corcovado
is a 700-meter mountain located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I have been in Rio
and visited the Corcovado mountain a couple times. It is a mountain that has
the statue of Christ the Redeemer on its top.
The
mountain is composed mainly of phacoidal gneiss, a very common rock in the city
of Rio de Janeiro. Being also the main constituent rock of Sugar Loaf, and
Arpoador Rock, it was probably formed about 600 million years ago.
Corcovado
is resistant to erosion; the brecciated metasedimentary material located near
fault zones has been supplying Rio with fresh water for centuries. This
resistant augen gneiss, characterized by its pink eye-shaped feldspars, also
contains leptinitic gneiss, with tiny garnet crystals.
