Qixing Mountain |
On our last trip to Taiwan, we made our way to the east coast for a weekend trip to hot springs in Yilan and Hualien. Before that though, we had to drive through Taipei, where we passed Qixing Mountain, the tallest mountain near Taipei and as my fiancé pointed out to me, it is a quiescent volcano. It is part of the Datun Volcano Group that is also dormant, but there has been studies that show that there are magma chambers that are still active inside. This would cause the natural hot spring steam that can be seen rising from the side of the mountain. As the volcano last erupted over 700,000 years ago, and Taiwan itself is not part of active volcanic activity despite being on a convergent boundary plate.
Maybe some day I will get to hike up to the summit one of these days, instead of only seeing it from the window of a car.
