I traveled to Death Valley this week, located in California. Specifically, I went to Mosaic Canyon, which is known best for its breccia, which are angular rocks of varying different types that have been cemented together by time and pressure. The word breccia means roughly "stoned from loose gravel". These folded/tilted rocks lead me to wonder about possible unconformities and other geologic activity that has occurred in the area, as it would seem that processes of deposition have been interrupted, and some erosion has happened before the deposition resumed. I would suspect that they are primarily clastic sedimentary rocks, but I would need to make further observations about the surrounding geology. I think that a geologic map might be crucial in trying to identify the sources of these breccia.
