Week 5: Southern Alps - Mike Kaszuba

This week I am headed to Southern Alps in New Zealand. I decided to visit this place virtually, because if I ever get the chance, Id love to see this area in real life. This mountain range is formed by the Australian tectonic plate and the Pacific tectonic plate pushing together. New Zealand was originally apart of the Super continent of Gondwana, but broke away around 83 million years ago. This is what lead to the drift and movement of the plates, and the eventual forming of the Southern Alps. The range is also considered a “young” range as it has only emerged within the last five million years or so. To me that seems like a long time, but comparing them to the rest of the formations really help put things into perspective.
