During my travels to Iceland a few years ago, I visited the Thrihnukagigur volcano. This volcano like many others in Iceland, sits on the Mid Atlantic Ridge which is known to be one of the most active volcanic regions in the world. This area is so active because of the earths plates moving apart, causing the earths crust to open up. Although Iceland is home to many volcanos that erupt quite frequently, according to my tour guide Thrihnukagigur has not shown activity in nearly 4,000 years. In other words this volcano is not considered to be very threatening. Because of this they actually offer tours down inside the 700 ft. deep volcano. However, if this volcano were to erupt again, it would likely be catastrophic due to its enormous size and proximity to the capital city of Reykjavik. Reykjavik is home to nearly 95% of the entire countries population.
