Week 5 - Convergent Plates

Panoramic View of the Pontic Mountains (Wikipedia, 2018).

The Pontic Mountains are located Anatolia, Turkey, near the Black Sea, and extend into part of Georgia. The highest peak is known as Dogukaradeniz Daglari at 3942 meters high.

The Eurasian Plate and the African Plate collided to form this mountain range. These are both continental plates that have collided into each other but are also drifting apart from other plates, causing natural disasters such as volcanoes in Iceland. Thus, these mountain ranges were formed by a continental-continental boundary. The North Anatolian Fault and the Northeast Anatolian Fault run along the length of the Pontic Mountains. These are strike-slip faults.
