Week 4 Volcanos

[wikipedia]

Villarrica is one of Chile’s most active volcanoes. Villarrica is a large stratovolcano that is part of the Andean mountain chain along the Mocha-Villarrica fault. Villarrica has its upper part covered by snow and glaciers. Ash coverings insulate the glaciers slowing down the shrink rate. Rain fall and snow melt contributes to mud and debris flow.

The magma for this volcano is of basaltic and andesitic composition that is being supplied by the subduction of the Nasca plate under the Pacific ocean. Villarrica has a strombolian eruption type with ejection of incandescent pyroclasts and lava flows. According to its wikipedia page, its last eruption is reported to be from December 2014 to June 2015.
